Severe storms have resulted in interstate closures and power disruptions across central Illinois.
Around 2 p.m. Sunday, ISP Troop 7 reported that southbound I-57 was closed at exit 229 for Monticello and Savoy due to a three-vehicle incident. One driver was transported to the hospital with injuries.
An overturned tractor-trailer has closed westbound I-74 between St. Joe and Ogden, according to state police.
In Douglas County, troopers responded to a rollover accident on I-57 southbound near Arcola. The motorist was sent to a hospital with injuries.
The National Weather Service has received storm reports indicating “some structural damage from high winds” in Champaign County. The report was distributed by the Champaign County Emergency Management Office.
A WAND News crew discovered damage near Tolono, which was under Tornado Warning at one point Sunday afternoon. There have been no confirmed reports of a tornado on the ground, but the meteorological service reported severe wind gusts over 50 mph (ca. 80 km/h) in Champaign County.
Other reports showed trees and power wires down in Champaign and Coles counties.
During peak outages at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Ameren reported over 4,000 customers without power in Champaign County and over 3,600 in Coles County. Vermilion County had slightly more than 1,000 customers without power.
By 5:30 p.m. Sunday, most customers who had lost power had it restored. Approximately 1,000 Ameren customers in east central Illinois lost power, but the disruptions were widespread.
