Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Thursday that the man convicted of fatally shooting his pregnant ex-girlfriend in Harlem in 2021 had been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Justin Soriano, 43, was found guilty in November of murdering Shanice Young, 31, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her death. According to prosecutors, Soriano shot Young in the face many times in the early morning hours of September 12, 2021, following an argument
Justin Soriano will serve state prison time for viciously murdering Shanice Young on what should have been a joyous and memorable occasion,” said District Attorney Bragg following Thursday’s sentencing.
Young was with her two daughters, cousin, and friends when Soriano met them near her apartment building on West 128th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. According to prosecution testimony, he arrived on a motorcycle dressed in all black, with a face mask and latex gloves.

After chasing one of Young’s male acquaintances around the building, Soriano left and approached Young, who had exited his automobile. When she questioned why he was there, he allegedly repeated her question before firing three close-range rounds at her head. According to authorities, two of the bullets entered her brain.
Four children, including Young’s two daughters, observed the shooting from inside the van. Young and her unborn child were declared dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Soriano fled the scene and remained at large until he was apprehended in the Bronx four days later on September 16, 2021. On November 21, 2024, a New York Supreme Court jury convicted him guilty of all charges, including second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm.
