Leechburg man killed in motorcycle crash in Gilpin Township

Gilpin Township, Pa. – SR 66 in Gilpin Township was closed for several hours Friday morning after a fatal motorcycle crash near the River’s Edge Canoe and Kayak facility.

Armstrong Co. Coroner Brian Myers released the following information on the fatal crash in Gilpin Township.

Coroner Myers said Ronald M. Mego, 55, of Leechburg was fatally injured when the 2001 Harley Davidson he was operating left the roadway, hit a utility pole and ejected the subject. This incident happened this morning at approximately 6:28 AM in Gilpin Township.

A male subject was killed when the Harley Davidson he was riding left the roadway and struck a utility pole and fire hydrant at approximately 3140 River Rd. in Gilpin Twp.

The male subject was traveling north towards Leechburg when he lost control of the bike, leaving the roadway, through a yard into a utility pole and fire hydrant. The subject was thrown from the bike approximately 30 feet. The subject was wearing a helmet.

No autopsy will be performed. Toxicological analysis will be back in a few weeks. Speed is believed to be a factor. The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Armstrong Co. Coroner Brian K. Myers.

The Coroner’s office was assisted at the scene by PSP- Kittanning, Gilpin Twp. FD, Leechburg FD, Leechburg Police, Armstrong Co. Sheriff’s Office and Lower Kiski EMS.
