A man who swindled over $850,000 from homeowners has been sentenced to 150 months in prison.
Richard P. Wooton, 55, pleaded guilty in February to one count of theft by deception in two separate cases, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
According to the criminal complaint, Wooton worked for Crossroads Remodeling in Hennepin, Wright, and Sherburne counties in 2016 without legal licensure. He allegedly instructed victims to pay the majority of the contract up front before any work was finished. The complaint detailed a pattern of illegal behavior, including six prior felony convictions spanning three decades.
“Mr. Wooton swindled dozens of homeowners by promising work and taking payment for projects that were never completed, in addition to committing theft by swindle against several businesses,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in a press release. “He is being held accountable for his actions and the damage he caused.”
