Man killed by train in Hempfield Township

Hempfield Township, Pa. – Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha released the following information after a Train/Pedestrian Fatality on July 30, 2019 @ 9:18 PM along the Norfolk Southern Railway, #1 Main Track, Mile Post 328.00 in Hempfield Township.

Coroner Bacha said the decedent Thomas R. Brown, a 57 y/o male from Youghiogheny Street in Penn Borough died from Multiple Blunt Force Injuries due to being struck by the train.

The decedent was seated on the rail of the tracks when the conductor and engineer of an eastbound Norfolk Southern train viewed the decedent on the track. The train initiated its brakes and sounded the horn. The decedent failed to remove himself from the track and was struck by the train.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The manner of death is pending further investigation into the incident. Toxicology results will not be available for several weeks.

Norfolk Southern Railway Police and Pennsylvania State Police also investigated.
