A Venezuelan gang member convicted of murder in Maryland was freed from detention, despite an ongoing immigration detainer, and now faces deportation, according to authorities.
Wilmer Antonio Echenique-Navarro, 22, of Capitol Heights, was arrested in April 2024 for the deadly shooting of Derek Coleman, 40, in Takoma Park.
Despite an active detainer by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), he was released from Prince George’s County Department of Corrections custody, according to an ICE statement.
On Tuesday, March 18, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Baltimore arrested Echenique-Navarro.
He is still in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
Echenique-Navarro has been recognized as a member of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuela-based transnational criminal organization.
The gang has spread throughout Latin America and the United States, following the migration patterns of Venezuelan citizens.
