A band of freezing rain heading south from Ontario is likely to cause hazardous travel conditions and some power disruptions in northern New York early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service and Environment Canada, locations along the US-Canada border, including Watertown, Plattsburgh, and St. Lawrence County, might expect ice accumulations ranging from 5 to 10 millimeters beginning Sunday morning and continuing into the evening. Temperatures will stay around freezing throughout the day, increasing the potential of ice accumulation on trees, power lines, and roads.
Residents should prepare for slippery sidewalks, possibly tree damage, and limited power outages, according to officials. Winds gusting to 15 km/h (about 10 mph) might intensify ice-related stress on infrastructure, particularly in exposed rural regions.
Expect challenging travel from Sunday morning until late evening. Drivers are encouraged to postpone non-essential excursions, install winter tires, and maintain an emergency kit in their vehicles. Pedestrians should be cautious on untreated walkways.
Residents in border regions should closely follow U.S. and Canadian weather advisories, as additional freezing rain warnings may be issued late Saturday into early Sunday.
