New Kensington, Pa. – A recent crash into a utility pole in New Kensington and damage to three cars that were side-swiped on January 1, 2019 are alleged to have occurred after a Pittsburgh man admits to being drunk, but not the operator responsible for the incident.
New Kensington Police were responding to the area of 333 Freeport Road for a reported vehicle accident with multiple calls and reports of power outages in the area. Police arrived on scene to find Richard James Iozzi III, age 38 of Pittsburgh stating he had just arrived on scene to see an unknown actor fleeing from his truck down Freeport Road.
According to the police criminal complaint, Iozzi was noted to have slurred speech, an unsteady gait, extremely bloodshot glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from his breath. Iozzi openly admitted he was “drunk”. He also had a laceration and swelling to his right eye that appeared to be fresh and had wet blood. Iozzi was arrested for public drunkenness at that time and was transported to NKPD and booked into Cell #3.
Later at the scene, investigating officers were able to determine a gray Chevrolet Silverado which was owned by Iozzi was traveling south on Freeport Road. A witness was located who stated that he witnessed “the guy you took away” Iozzi, get out of the drivers seat of the vehicle when the vehicle came to rest. Iozzi was informed he was being arrested for reasonable suspicion of DUI. Iozzi initially refused to submit to a blood test, then later agreed to a blood draw. Iozzi was transported to AVH and during transport was freely stating that he was not driving and he believed that “Jay White” stole his truck in Harrison Township due to ongoing issues.
A report on the incident indicated the results from the Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Forensic Services indicated a BAC of .158%. Police also inquired with Iozzi’s insurance carrier and it was determined Iozzi’s insurance coverage “lapsed”.
Iozzi’s Charges: M DUI: High Rte of Alc (Bac.10 – <.16) 1st Off 01/01/2019, M DUI: Gen Imp/Inc of Driving Safely - 1st Off, S Oper Veh W/O Req'd Financ Resp, S Careless Driving, and S Driving and Unregistered Vehicle. A Preliminary Hearing is scheduled on 03/14/2019 @ 2:00 pm before the Honorable Magisterial District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. Power in several areas of New Kensington, Arnold, and Lower Burrell were affected by the crash for several hours.
