County Police Investigate Non-Fatal Crash Following A Police Pursuit

Richland Township, Allegheny County – On April 10, 2020 at 9:38AM, officers of the Northern Regional Police Department were contacted by Allegheny County Communications to assist with attempting to stop a stolen silver Kia Forte that was being followed into Allegheny County by an officer of the Middlesex Twp. Police Department.

Middlesex Police conducted a traffic stop of the stolen Kia on State Route 8 South at Dickey Road as Northern Regional officers approached. The stolen vehicle fled the stop southbound before colliding with a Toyota Highlander occupied by a 63-year-old male and a 64-year-old female at the intersection of State Route 910 and State Route 8. The 64-year-old female was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. The driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as a 15-year-old male who was also transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

Northern Regional Police requested the assistance of the Allegheny County Police Department to investigate. Detectives and a Collision Reconstructionist responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Detectives learned that at 9:25 AM, Butler Township Police had taken a report for the stolen vehicle and issued a B.O.L.O describing the Silver Kia that was later observed and stopped by the Middlesex officer. When the Middlesex officer stopped the vehicle at Dickey Rd., he gave verbal commands to the 15-year-old driver who refused to comply. The driver pulled away, steering around the police vehicle which was positioned in front of him. The officer fired his weapon approximately four times into the left rear driver’s side tire attempting to disable the stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle fled south on State Route 8. The Middlesex Police Officer gave pursuit of the stolen vehicle, from a distance, and with lights and sirens activated. The pursuit continued for approximately 7/10 of a mile when the Kia struck the Toyota Highlander at the intersection of Rt.8 and Rt. 910.

At this time the investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released upon review by the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.
