Baldwin Borough, Allegheny County – On July 19, 2018 at 8:05 PM, Baldwin Borough Police were called to 5021 Elmwood Drive for a report of a 7-year-old female found not breathing in a neighbor’s swimming pool.
An off-duty Upper St. Clair Police Officer had been in the area and heard two females screaming for help and saw one of them was carrying a small child. He placed the unresponsive child on the ground and began CPR. Baldwin Borough Police and EMS arrived on scene. The child was transported to an area hospital where she died shortly afterwards.
County Police Homicide Detectives initiated an investigation. Detectives learned that the child was in the care of 25-year-old Bhima Acharya, who had been babysitting the child that afternoon. The homeowners of the swimming pool were on vacation and did not permit anyone to use the pool. Detectives also learned that the ladder to the above ground had been in the up or closed position prior to the child entering the pool. After the child had been discovered, the ladder was in the down or open position.
Today, Bhima Acharya was charged with involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children. She has been arrested and will be taken to the Allegheny County Jail to await arraignment.
Anyone with information concerning the incident is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Tipline at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477); callers can remain anonymous. The department can also be reached via its social media sites.
