Car stuck on tracks gets hit by train in East Vandergrift

East Vandergrift, Pa. – Police in Vandergrift, along with the Vandergrift Fire department and Oklahoma EMS were on scene of a vehicle vs. train incident along Kennedy Avenue in East Vandergrift about 2:30 am Wednesday morning.

Vandergrift Police said the Leechburg man was attempting to cross the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks at Risher street when the driver apparently made a right turn to early catching the right front wheel on the tracks and was unable to get off the tracks before being hit by the train.

After impact, the green 4 door sedan was pushed down the tracks in the same direction the train was traveling more than 200 yards. When AKVNEWS arrived on scene, the driver was still sitting in the vehicle with a Vandergrift officer talking to the individual. It was not immediately known if the driver continued to stay inside the vehicle due to a medical condition or possible intoxication. A short time later, the driver exited the vehicle with the help of EMS and police.

Norfolk Southern Police was called to the scene and a representative was seen walking near the engine. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
