Avonmore man dies after head-on type crash in Washington Township

Washington Township, Pa. – Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha has released the following information after a two-vehicle head-on type crash/fatality on SR 286 near Branthoover Lane, Washington Township.

Coroner Bacha said Charles W. Gestrich, Jr. age 45 of Indiana Avenue in Avonmore Borough was the operator and lone occupant of a 2001 Hyundai Accent traveling east on State Route 286 about 5:08 PM Tuesday evening. Coroner Bacha reported the Cause of Death as Blunt Force Trauma of the Head, Thorax, Abdomen and Lower Extremities due to a two vehicle collision.

The coroner reports Gestrich crossed the centerline into the opposite lane of travel and struck an oncoming 2011 Toyota RAV4. Gestrich was partially ejected from the vehicle. Deputy Coroner Timothy P. O’Donnell pronounced the decedent dead at the scene. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the incident. A seat-belt was not utilized by the decedent and air bags were not deployed in the crash. No autopsy will be performed. The driver’s identity of the RAV4 has not been released by Washington Township Police. The extent of injuries to the other driver is not known.

Washington Township Police also investigated and will release additional details at their discretion.
