Arnold, Pa. – A lunchtime meal at the Roy A. Hunt Elementary school was another in a series of events for the young school kids to interact with the local police departments and a local government official Wednesday afternoon.

Manning the turkey cutting was New Kensington Mayor Tom Guzzo and Arnold Police Chief Eric Doutt. Inside the kitchen and behind the counter serving the students was the distinguished New Kensington Police Chief Bob Deringer along with Arnold Patrolman Ryan Hanford.

The menu consisted of turkey, honey glazed carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy, honey glazed cornbread, apple crisp and the big favorite, peanut butter, and jelly sandwiches.

Arnold Police Chief Eric Doutt said officers become familiar faces in the school to young students by being their friends and just not police officers. The goal with young kids is to help them see that the police care about them by one-on-one interaction. Seeing the same officers at a playground or on their street are excellent building blocks for kids to feel safe in their community.

Arnold Patrolman Ryan Hanford takes time to mingle with students by sitting with them at luncheon tables discussing all sorts of things. It’s great for our community said Chief Doutt, who is a strong advocate of community policing. Chief Doutt wishes to thank New Kensington Mayor Tom Guzzo and New Kensington Police Chief Bob Deringer for their help with their participation in yesterday’s lunch serving to the students.
