North Versailles Township, Allegheny County – At approximately 9:56 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018, the North Versailles Police were dispatched to 120 Lincoln Avenue in response to a 9-1-1 call about a domestic disturbance.
They encountered a male and female engaged in a non-violent argument. The female party left the residence of her own volition, leaving the couple’s four-year-old child in the custody of his father.
Approximately 30 minutes later the female called 9-1-1 again and reported the father of the child had called her and threatened to kill the child. The North Versailles Police responded back to the address and attempted to make contact. The male refused to open a dialogue with the officers and barricaded himself in the residence. At that point, they requested the tactical support of the Allegheny County Police SWAT team and Crisis Negotiations Unit. Those units responded and were able to make contact with the male.
As negotiations continued, the male’s demeanor became markedly more agitated. He made continuous threats to hurt and/or kill the child. At approximately 3:20 a.m., the male became irate and could be heard screaming and the child could be heard screaming and being struck. At that point, SWAT officers forced entry in the residence. They found the male hiding under blankets in the bedroom holding the child in front of him. They removed the child and took the male into custody without further incident.
The child had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and SWAT medics started life saving measures immediately. The child was flown via medical helicopter to a local trauma hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition. He is expected to survive his wounds.
The male was identified as 28-year-old Syneca Ashley, Sr. He was arrested on scene and will be charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of terroristic threats. He will be lodged in the Allegheny County Jail to await arraignment on those charges.
