Pet dies in North Buffalo Township house fire Sunday night

North Buffalo Township, Pa. – Firefighters from multiple communities battled a house fire in 700 block of Ferne Drive late Sunday evening that left a family pet deceased from smoke inside the structure.

West Kittanning Fire Chief Bernie Bowser said the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen of the large cathedral type structure. Chief Bowser said the fire climbed the walls in the kitchen and traveled into the living room area and into the cathedral ceiling towards the rear of the structure. Firefighters cut a very large hole in the roof to ventilate the structure and utilized fans to assist with that process.

Residents of the structure were away in Cleveland when the fire started however one pet was inside unable to escape the heavy smoke conditions. No other injuries were reported. Fire crews from East Franklin and Kittanning were on scene for nearly 3 hours.

The actual cause of the fire remains under investigation.
