Hempfield Township man dies in vehicle crash Thursday evening

Hempfield Township, Pa. – Westmoreland County Coroner Kenneth A. Bacha has identified a Hempfield Township man involved in a MVA that occurred January 4, 2018 on State Route 119 near Martin Road Hempfield Township about 7:31 pm Thursday night.

Coroner Bacha said Donald J. Smith, a 56 y/o male from State Route 819 died of Blunt Force Trauma to the Head, Neck, and Chest due to a single vehicle collision. Smith was the operator and lone occupant of a 2011, Toyota RAV4, traveling north on State Route 119.

Smith failed to negotiate a right curve in the roadway, crossed the center line, traveled off the west side of the roadway, and struck an embankment.

Smith was entrapped in the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the incident with airbag deployment. No seat belt was utilized and cell phone useage is not believed to have been a factor in the incident. The manner of death has been ruled accidental.

Pennsylvania State Police Greensburg Barracks also investigated and will release additional details at their discre
