Harrison Township, Allegheny County – Yesterday evening, November 26, 2018, at approximately 9:07 p.m., the Harrison Township Police and paramedics were dispatched to 40 Municipal Drive in the Sheldon Park housing complex in response to a 9-1-1 call about a shooting.

There they found two females suffering from gunshot wounds. They were a 16-year-old and her 41-year-old mother. Both were transported to local hospitals where the 41-year-old is currently listed in critical condition and the 16-year-old in stable condition.

As the situation unfolded, it was learned that the person responsible for the shooting resided at 42 Municipal Drive. and had retreated into the residence. The Harrison Twp. Police requested Allegheny County Police SWAT and its Homicide Unit. As SWAT was setting up a perimeter and evacuating the neighbors, a female from Unit 42 called 9-1-1 to report the male suspect had committed suicide.

She and her son were evacuated from the residence. SWAT made entry and confirmed the suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Through the course of the investigation, the suspect was identified as 48-year-old Eddie Layne. The other residents of the unit were his ex-wife and son. Layne was temporarily being permitted to stay in the residence.

It has been learned that Layne has suffered from mental illness for over twenty years. Witnesses reported that yesterday evening Layne became agitated and believed his neighbors were spying on him. Without warning he took a shotgun outside where he shot both females. At this point it is unclear how Layne came into possession of any firearms. The investigation is ongoing.
