3 critical patients flown from bypass at Craigdell Road, 2 ground transported

New Kensington, Pa. – 3 people were flown by helicopter Monday afternoon about 1:00 after a serious 2-vehicle crash on SR 56 at Criagdell Road forcing authorities to shut down the bypass for crash investigations.

New Kensington Police Chief Jim Klein said the 2-vehicle crash involved a mini van carrying 4 occupants ( 2 pediatric ) and a pickup truck occupied by just the driver. Chief Klein said the van was coming down Craigdell Road and the pickup truck was traveling West on SR 56 towards New Kensington.

2 people were entrapped in their vehicle and one person was ejected, all 5 people were transported to the hospital. Police were still trying to determine who was at fault.

On scene: A massive car part debris field was scattered everywhere in the East and Westbound lanes. Fire rescue units worked to remove the final patient entrapped in the van while another rescue crew worked to free the patient from a Chevy pickup truck. Patients who needed flown from the scene were loaded into EMS truck as 2 helicopters prepared to land on the roadway. A third helicopter landed about 20 minutes later to air transport the third critical patient.

Police Chief Jim Klein and several New Kensington Detectives were busy preparing the scene for reconstruction due to the seriousness of the patients injuries. EMS and Fire crews did an excellent job extricating the patients and preparing them for air transport.
