3 arraigned on Kidnap, assault charges in Arnold

Arnold, Pa. – Two women and a man allegedly kidnapped and tortured a woman in a basement this past Saturday night were arraigned by video before the Honorable Frank J. Pallone Jr. Monday afternoon in New Kensington.

According to the police criminal complaint, Arnold Police responded to the 1500 block of 3rd Avenue in the City of Arnold for an assault on a female who had been held against her will. When police arrived, they met with the caller and the victim who were both inside a neighbor’s home.

Arrested in the incident were Stephanie Unruh, age 30 of Victoria Avenue in New Kensington, Michael Battaglia, age 41 of 16th Street in Arnold and Devon Hamilton, age 25 who’s address is listed as 312 Clay Avenue in Mt. Pleasant, Pa.

The three are accused of kidnapping to inflict injury/terror and Aggravated Assault in the incident.

The Incident:

The victim stated a midnight argument began with her boyfriend Michael Battaglia and two females, Stephanie Unruh and Devon Hamilton. The three actors then stripped the victim of her clothes and dragged her down stairs to the basement of Battaglia’s home at 208 16th Street in Arnold.

The victim stated the three then tied her with rope to a post in the basement and that Battaglia repeatedly punched her in the face and head and that the three also repeatedly struck her in the head with a wooden broom handle.

The victim was able to get free of the rope and hid for a brief time in the basement until they found her. They tied her to a chair and the pole again and continued to beat her. The victim also stated that Hamilton burned her in the chest with a lit cigarette. The actors eventually left her tied up naked and alone in the basement and went upstairs, falling asleep.

After being held against her will for over 8 hours, she was eventually able to free herself and escape from the house and go next door, asking for help. Police say the victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Police then went to 208 16th Street where Battaglia answered the door. Battaglia was arrested without incident. Police entered the home to ensure there was no one else being held captive.

Devon Hamilton was located in an upstairs bedroom and was also arrested. The actors were transported to New Keninsington PD for processing. A warrant was issued for Stephanie Unrun.

Today’s arraignment ended with all three held in the Westmoreland County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond each. A Preliminary Hearing is scheduled on September 21st @ 10:00 am.
